Making Greentown Beautiful

Members of the Parks and Trails Committee of Greentown Main Street Association conducted their annual Spring Community Service Day on Saturday, May 21. Volunteers planted flowers, pulled weeds and laid mulch at several public locations around Greentown including the Fountain Plaza, downtown planters, the town sign at the west edge of town, and the trailhead of the Comet Trail.

Youth Baseball Opening Day

This was one of many floats in the Youth Baseball parade on May 7.
The team is Dr. Sedagahat’s Athletics. The players are throwing candy to the bystanders.
Greentown Youth Baseball started the 2011 season with a parade on Saturday, May 7. Each team decorated a float, which was a pickup truck or a trailer. The parade proceeded from the fairgrounds to the high school, where opening ceremonies were conducted and every team played a game or two.
There are 209 boys and girls enrolled in the Greentown league this year. The players are placed on teams according to age, 4-6, 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15. Those age 7-12 will be playing in the City (Kokomo) Tourney. They will be traveling around the county playing Kokomo and other county teams. The schedule is posted on

Eastern’s 7th grade students participated in the annual project, “History Close to Home: A Living Biography” in which they interviewed a senior citizen of their choice. Social studies teacher, Brad Shrock, stated, “Our history lives in our parents, grandparents, friends and acquaintances, and beyond, and it is our responsibility to demonstrate personal involvement with an age group that has so much to give. The sayings, ‘history repeats itself’ and ‘history is alive,’ mean very little in print, but when we are exposed to living examples we can more easily see a connection and make appropriate adjustments for the future. People, faces, names and places make our history meaningful.”

Ribbon Cutting at Dirt N Turf
A three day Grand Opening was held on May 19-21 at Dirt-n-Turf, located on US 35 between Greentown and Kokomo. Greentown Main Street Association performed a ribbon cutting ceremony and presented the business with a 2011membership. The company is a division of Greentown Equipment. Sales and rentals are offered for Kubota, Bobcat, New Holland, Ferris, Land Pride and Big Dog brands.

A grand opening of the newly remodeled “Wanda’s Shoppe,” located on West Main Street in Greentown will be held Friday and Saturday, June 8-9. The announcement was made this week by Miss Wanda Lawrence, manager of the women’s and children’s apparel store.
The new location is the building where Miss Lawrence’s father, the late Ed Lawrence, had a barber shop for many years until
his death in December. When the business was first opened last November, it was located in the rear of the State Bank of Greentown on South Meridian Street and the move has been made from that location.
