Miss Lawrence to Open Shop Friday
A grand opening of the newly remodeled “Wanda’s Shoppe,” located on West Main Street in Greentown will be held Friday and Saturday, June 8-9.  The announcement was made this week by Miss Wanda Lawrence, manager of the women’s and children’s apparel store.
The new location is the building where Miss Lawrence’s father, the late Ed Lawrence, had a barber shop for many years until
his death in December.  When the business was first opened last November, it was located in the rear of the State Bank of Greentown on South Meridian Street and the move has been made from that location.

Ground Observer Corps to Have First 33-Hour Drill
   Greentown’s Ground Observer Corps will
go through a strenuous 15-hour drill this week-end – its third since the corps was organized.
The drill, according to Chief Observer Gerald Carr, will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, and will go straight through to 5 p.m., Sunday.  It is the first “all-night” watch for the group.
All plane “contacts” will be phoned in to the filter center at South Bend.  Observation post will be at the corner at Rudy’s drug store.
A pre-drill meeting of the unit will be held a 7 p.m. tonight in the Highway Café.
“All those,” said Carr, “who are interested in active training for a duty they might perform in case of atomic war are urged to attend.  Whether or not you have had service is unimportant.  All that is important is that our locality has surveillance over the forces which might strike against us.  The Observer Corps has been formed for that purpose.”

Greentown Gems
A LOT OF people hated to see the bricks go on South Meridian Street, but it was almost a have-to case because of the dangerous condition of the street.
However, there are no plans at this time to cover bricks on North Meridian Street.  “Just no money” is the way the Town Board puts it.
Several residents have expressed a desire to at least keep the brick street in front of the museum and Town Hall.   JIM LANNING IS a big booster of the glass festival.
Jim, whose service station and garage is located at Meridian and Grant Streets in the heart of the festival area, closed last year during the event and his is going to do the same thing this year.
A lot of people would refuse to do it, and some would even complain to the town board, but Jim cheerfully goes along with the festival.
It’s for sure, Jim, that everyone connected with the glass museum and festival appreciate your attitude.

MEMBERS OF GREENTOWN’S Fire Company reported the fire station is refurbished and ready for the Art Show to be held there during the Glass Festival.  The floors have been painted and hangers put up for art displays.

Greentown Firing Range Approved
A firing range and training area for the Greentown and Howard County police departments was approved Tuesday by the Howard County Board of Zoning Appeals.
It will be located at the Greentown Sanitary Landfill.
The firing range will be on an acre at the northeast corner of the landfill, which is on road 900 East.  Surrounded on three sides by shrubs and trees, it will have a 10-foot high embankment behind the target area.
