Community Garden Gets Off (In) the Ground
After several months of planning, the first plants had their roots placed in the soil of the Greentown Community Garden on June 3. A partnership of Eastern School Corporation and the Parks and Trails Committee of Greentown Main Street Association, the half-acre plot is on South Meridian Street, west of a town water tower. The land is owned by the school corporation and currently rented by Kent Young, who plowed the land for the garden.
Through the efforts of Eastern Elementary Assistant Principal, Mike Kantz, a grant was
awarded from Lowe’s to provide start-up funds. The planning and operation will be carried out by the Community Garden Committee (under the Parks and Trails Committee), chaired by Anita French. A storage barn was purchased. Plants have been donated by the Kokomo Community Garden as well as some from the earlier plant sale held by the Parks and Trails Committee.
Anita French and Jolene Rule planted 100 tomato plants, as well as some zuchinni and cucumbers on June 3. A regular volunteer work day will be held each Wednesday (weather permitting), 9 a.m. to noon, during the growing season. Volunteers are needed for more planting, weeding, and harvesting. The plan is that one-half of the produce will be sold at the Greentown Farmers Market and the remainder given to local food banks.
Items still needed (new or gently used) are garden wagon, picnic table, lawn chairs, tomato cages, rakes, shovels, hoes, tiller, and 5 gallon buckets. Anita said that a pavilion, 10' X 12', to provide shade for the workers, would be a wonderful donation. To donate any of those items, contact Anita at 765-431-8376.
